Florida Museum of History and Natural Science

The Florida Museum of History and Natural Science, located on the UF campus, strives to preserve, understand and interpret Florida’s cultural heritage and biological diversity.

What YOU can do to help: Volunteers are needed in the following areas.  If you wish to volunteer, RSVP on the website to attend a volunteer orientation (held in March, June, September, and December).  At the volunteer orientation you will learn more about the volunteer opportunities and be able to find a match for your skills, interests, and availability.  (You must be at least 18 years old to RSVP.)

Docent Naturalist Volunteers: Work in the Natural Area Teaching Laboratory to facilitate student discovery and exploration. Lead tours in activities outdoors.

Museum On the Move Volunteers: Bring museum programs to schools.

Museum Tour Docent Volunteers: Lead tours through each exhibit area of the museum.  Volunteers are needed 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m Tues-Fri.

Wigglers and Walkers Volunteers: Plan and lead a monthly preschool program.

Research and Collections Volunteers: Prepare, sort, label museum objects and specimens.

Butterfly Rainforest Interpreter Volunteers: Interpret the flora and fauna in the butterfly rainforest.  Two-hour shifts are available.

Horticulture Volunteers: Work in the Butterfly Rainforest: planting, weeding, watering, gardening. Three-hour shifts are available.

Lepidoptera Collections Volunteers: Care and maintenance of Lepidoptera collection. Keep records, and mount and label specimens. 

Child-Adult Team Volunteers: This program is for children ages 7 to 11 years old and a parent or authorized adult (18+) to work in the museum together. 

Junior Volunteers: Run Discovery Carts (interactive carts with pictures, activities, and hands-on objects) and the Discovery Room (children and families to interact with natural history objects, lesson, and games). Junior Volunteers also help with summer camps and special events and programs throughout the year. Most Junior Volunteer opportunities take place on weekends or throughout the summer. JV's must be age 12 or older. In March of each year (March 1), 12 to 17-year-olds can apply for the summer Junior Volunteer Program.
