What they do: Pleasant Place provides a
healthy and safe home for teenage girls who are pregnant
and parenting while they finish school. These teen
mothers are wards of the state because of neglect,
homelessness, or abuse.
What YOU can do to help: Volunteers are
needed in the following areas:
Volunteer Angels: These volunteers teach
the young mothers useful skills from finances to
cooking. Volunteers with experience in these areas
are needed:
Family Literacy
Mentoring/Tutoring
Counseling
Cooking/Nutrition
Family Development
Personal Angels: These volunteers “adopt”
a mother and child for a year (or more) and give a
heartfelt gift for that mother and child five times a
year.
House Angels: These volunteers donate
much-needed items for the house, the mothers, and the
babies.
House: paper products, carpeting,
housecleaning supplies, storage containers, laundry
supplies
Mothers: bed linens, clothing (sizes
0 to 20), washcloths, blankets, towels, school
supplies
Babies: diapers, toilet training
pants, baby wipes, clothing (newborn-2T), books,
strollers, blankets, toys, car setas
Welcome Baskets: Volunteers are
needed to put together welcome baskets filled with
necessities to donate to Pleasant Place. Please
fill a wicker clothes basket with the
following items:
1 bottle shampoo, 1 box sanitary napkins, 1
box tampons, 1 bottle body spray, 1 bottle
conditioner, 1 bottle body lotion, 1 stick deodorant,
1 bottle body powder, 2 bars soap, 2 washcloths, 2
pairs slipper socks, 1 pair white socks, 1 towel, 1
comb, 1 toothbrush, 1 box dental floss, 1 brush, 1
tube toothpaste, 1 bottle mouthwash, 1 bottle body
wash, 1 loofah sponge
To volunteer, you will need to fill out a
Volunteer Application Form (call the phone number listed
above to get one). Then you will need to go a
personal interview before volunteering. Once you
have been accepted as a volunteer, you will get the
formal Volunteer Personnel Policy (which outlines
policies and guidelines). You will have an
orientation and training before volunteering as
well. If you volunteer more than 40 hrs a month or
are not supervised directly by a paid employee of
Pleasant Place, you must go through a background check,
which includes a Local Criminal Record Check, Affidavit
of Good Moral Character, Criminal Record Check, and
Employment History Check (all this cost approx.
$37).
